#800: Vessels – “Felt Smithing”
Leslie Samson
Wednesday (July 21), 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Difficulty: NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED

At sixteen, my first art training was as a silversmith. For years I worked with gold and silver – casting, soldering and raising hollow ware. It is natural for my early experiences to influence my current felt work.

Natural fibers can be transformed into a strong felt, which has been sculpted into a graceful shape with deliberate surface embellishments. This method of creating hollow forms utilizes many of the same approaches used to shape metal. Techniques like raising, fabrication, and repousse can be adapted to create related effects in felt. Felt can be carved, hinged and special elements can be “set” into the piece.

The emphasis of this class is to create a piece with a precious quality – a vessel as important as its contents. In this class, you will learn how to make really hard felt without needing arms like Popeye. You will learn how to set three-dimensional design elements into the body of your vessel, how to manipulate the surface and how to "engrave" colorful and distinctive linework into your piece.

This class offers a huge amount of new material in a format that is relaxed and enjoyable. Whether the direction you take your vessel is whimsical, stately, functional or not – you will see felt from a fresh perspective.
